Kaleidoscope

22 Sep

This post is dedicated to a toy that just doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Kaleidoscopes are excellent for visual-motor development and play. By presenting a kaleidoscope to a child, you can determine:

1. Child’s dominant eye

2. Is the child able to isolate one eye and look through the kaleidoscope by closing the opposite eye,

3. Does the child know where one of his eyes is located or does he put the kaleidoscope in the middle of his forehead?

4. Is the child able to stabilize the kaleidoscope with one hand, while turning the end to change the picture with the other hand?

5. Can the child switch eyes on command or does it take him awhile to find the opposite eye, close the correct eye, and switch hands?

Then during treatment, you can use the kaleidoscope to improve visual motor development in addition to:

1. Vestibular system- Look through the kaleidoscope while swinging

2. Left-right discrimination-  Follow commands to look through the kaleidoscope using the eye requested

3. To increase balance – look through the kaleidoscope while standing on on foot, kneeling, half-kneeling, etc.

4. Eye-hand coordination – isolating each eye and changing the picture by rotating the kaleidoscope

Have you ever use a kaleidoscope? What other activities can you do with a kaleidoscope?

Be blessed!
